We have been wanting to have a Red Ale theme for a while so why not in November.  I missed this meeting so I look forward to trying them all.  I know the Green Flash Hop Head Red is good but there are other good one in this bunch.

Beer Bums Meeting – August 2012 – Dog Days of Summer Beers

The Dog Days of Summer seemed appropriate for August as its the hottest month of the year.  It was a fairly open theme with several “dog” beers and so on.  All in all, a great group of brews.

The Brü Revü – Rahr & Sons Bucking Bock‏

The Rahr & Sons Bucking Bock is a German Style Spring Bock which is a Maibock or Heller Bock which are supposed to be heavy on the malt with little to no hop profile.  It poured a golden amber with a large white head and it was beautiful on this hot afternoon. The initial taste of the Bucking  Bock was bracingly bitter as I was expecting nothing but heavy malts.  As the beer warmed the bitterness faded but was still present. I am not sure if they were going for a hoppier Maibock but in terms of the style, the bitterness could be tamed. In the end the Bucking Bock was still an enjoyable beer although overly bitter for the style, and the higher than usual ABV made me forget all about the bitterness.

Beer Bums Meeting – June 2012 – Texas beers

I saw on some other blogs that they were taking a challenge for June to drink nothing but beers from their state.  I thought that was a good idea so our meeting was all Texas beers with bonus points for bringing and Austin beer.  The Texas craft beer scene just keeps getting better and this is a theme we will need to revisit. All good beers in this line-up with the Real Ale Devil’s Backbone always a favorite of mine.  Speaking of, looks like someone got a new label?  I brought the Hops and Grain Alt for the lone Austin representative.  Bonus points for me I suppose.

Beer Bums Meeting – January 2012 – Favorite Beers of 2011

For this meeting we brought our favorite beers from 2011.  Maybe a beer we tried for the first time and really loved, or one we just couldn’t stop drinking, etc.  It was a great collection for the month and a wide variety.  It was hard to pick a favorite, but the Trois Pistoles and Leviathan were really tasty!

The Brü Revü – Rahr & Sons Oktoberfest

This is the second Rahr & Sons beer I have tried and now I am really impressed.  The Gravel Road and now their Oktoberfest have been solid and consistent beers that are making me pay more attention to Rahr & Sons.  Their Oktoberfest was part of our Bums Meeting and I remember it being a standout in that group, and it was even better when I returned to it.  The Oktoberfest pours a dark amber with a nice tan head and all the trademark sweet malt aromas of the style.  The taste is a good sweet maltiness with a slight hop and even a bit of Chocolate.  For a darker beer it was light on the palate and very clean and drinkable.  The Rahr & Sons Oktoberfest was an outstanding Texas Oktoberfest that I will eagerly await every fall.

Beer Bums Meeting – October 2011 – Oktoberfest Beers

Ahhhh, nothing says fall like a good Oktoberfest.  It’s starting to feel like fall, if only in the morning.  Another great group of beers from our Bums meeting.  My favorites were the Brooklyn, Hofbrau, and the Rahr & Sons which was the best of the bunch.  Hassenpfeffer?!?  And of course: Welcome back Shawn!

The Brü Revü – Rahr & Sons Gravel Road

I had the Rahr & Sons Gravel Road on a recent Gingerman Pint Glass night which meant the beer came with a cool mason jar glass.  Rahr & Sons is a Texas brewery from Fort Worth that I unfortunately do not have a lot of experience with.  The Gravel Road is a German style Altbier that I found very enjoyable.  It’s a deep reddish amber color that’s not too heavy despite its 7% alcohol content.  I tasted a malty sweetness and slight caramel as well.  It went down fast and easy and was a good introduction to Rahr & Sons.  I will be sure to look for more of their beers in the future.
